Mayoral Deb(t)ate: your turn to ask the candidates about proper fiscal management and restraint

A very simple thought for the day.

Would you ever allow someone to take your checkbook and write checks from your account, without regard for how much money is in your account?

When all of the checks in your checkbook are used up and they come asking to use your credit card, do you give it to them?

When your checking account is drained and your credit card maxed out, do you then let them take out a loan in your name?

This is the kind of lacking fiscal discipline plaguing the City of Carmel and its constituent redevelopment entities. The mayor, director of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission and others will tell you every is fine, finances are in great shape and you needn’t worry a bit — simply because to acknowledge such issues exist on their watch becomes a significant political liability during an election campaign.

Political courage has many components. One is transparency. Another is citizen engagement. Putting personal ego and a quest for a legacy ahead of community consensus is irresponsible and risks the long-term fiscal health of the city.

Mayor Jim Brainard is scheduled to debate his challenger, Hamilton County Councilor Fred Glynn, on April 16th at 6:30PM at Ritz Charles, 12156 N.
